Eastern Counties Branch
The Eastern Counties Branch (ECB) meets on the 1st Sunday of every month at venues on the Herts/Essex border. For more information contact the branch secretary Janice Hawkes cabermoor@gmail.com or 07761 337200.
The ECB has been training HPRs since 1970 and our trainers are experienced in game shooting and field work.
The land we have access to gives scope to train for water work, retrieving and hunting. We occasionally put on field trial tuition days at the start of the shooting season for our branch members whose dogs are of sufficient standard to be worked under the gun.
Some trainees just want the gundog experience giving them some knowledge on how to enjoy and mentally stimulate their dogs without aspiring to working on game or with the gun but most go forward into field work with their HPRs. Some go on to compete at working tests, spring pointing tests and field trials.
We feel that it is important to get advice before the training goes wrong – as it often does with inexperienced handlers of HPRs – so puppies are always welcome but we advise that they should also be attending regular obedience classes with knowledgeable obedience trainers. Regular attendance at ECB is also encouraged in order for handler and dog to progress.
We have a Facebook page – GSP Club Eastern Counties Branch – which we recommend all members join as we put any change of details on this page (change of date, change of venue, upcoming events). We also ask that on a monthly basis you inform us (ideally on the Fb page) of your intention to turn up (or not) to training – the more notice you can give, the easier it is for us to organise the day.
Coffee and cake and a chat are always available at the end of the training session.
Highland Group
The German Shorthaired Pointer Club – Highland Group
The GSPC-Highland Group was first formed in 2003.
We are a small friendly group from all over the North of Scotland who meet on the first Sunday of the month (apart from January) at Culbin Forest to train our dogs who range from young puppies to older more experienced dogs.
We have a mix of members who work their dogs, enter field trials, working tests and pointing tests and members who want to do some gundog training but don’t shoot or partake in the working side. We encourage pet gundog training as this allows dogs to use some of their natural abilities and therefore makes for a happier dog.
We organise a few events over the year including a gundog working test and grouse experience days and shoot-over events.
We present three annual awards to our members – The Trainers Award to the handler who has made the best progress with their dog, The Novice Award to the handler who has attained the most points at tests/competitions, and The Stubblemere Trophy to the most successful dog in field trials.

The Group serves a large geographical area, currently providing training venues within the bounds of the Manchester, North Derbyshire, Lancashire and Cheshire region. Training classes are held monthly, all year round. Training classes are open to all HPR breeds, as long as their handlers are members of the German Shorthaired Pointer Club.
The aim of the group is to help handlers produce good-mannered shooting companions, whether worked solo as rough-shooting dogs, or in company beating and picking up, but dogs which are welcomed on shoots and can serve a useful purpose.
Perhaps the strength of our group lies in the diversity of those active members who have involvement in various shoots and who can bring their experience of game shooting and gundog work to the training scenario. There are opportunities within the group, for those handlers willing to put in the hard work which will get them there, to bring on a young puppy right through from initial training, via introduction to live game, to being shot over in the field.
The group holds a well-supported Working Test each year, on ground which is as near as possible to the type of terrain dogs in our area will be expected to work, and an annual clay shoot.

In Scotland we often have long distances to travel to meet other HPR enthusiasts, so we pride ourselves on the fact that we are a very friendly and approachable group.
Any of the HPR breeds are welcome to join us, at present we have Large Munsterlanders, GWPs, Vizslas, Wirehaired Vizslas, and GSPs all training with the group.
We run monthly training sessions near Dunblane on the second Sunday of the month, where we build on our dog’s natural ability and hone their hunting skills and offer advice and support to their owners.
Each year we hold a Working Test in early Summer which is a great opportunity for both members of the Scottish Group and members of other GSPC groups to get together and test our dogs’ skills, on a beautiful estate in the Angus glens, followed by a barbecue, and a chance to catch up with friends.
We also hold shoot over days during the shooting season, where we run walked up training sessions, on pheasants/ partridges on ground that is ideal for HPRs.
Some members of the group support a number of Scottish estates with Grouse counting both on the Spring and late summer.
We have members who are working towards Field Trials, whereas others are looking to train their dog to be a good working companion in the field. No matter what you are looking to do with your dog, if you are interested in training them to use their natural ability and hunting skills, why not join us.

VISIT HPR FT INFO WEBSITESurrey & Hampshire Branch
The GSP Surrey & Hants Branch re-started back in May 2023 and now meets every 3rd Sunday throughout the year at Elstead in Surrey. We are a friendly Club and welcome all HPRs at Puppy, Novice and Open level. We have a strong group of regular trainers, all owners of their own HPRs and therefore very competent to train new handlers and dogs to the Club. We adopt an inclusive approach to training, and give constructive feedback in all interactions with our handlers.
Notwithstanding, we are competitive, and where handlers want, we encourage them to enter both HPR Working Tests, and Field Trials so they can really hone their skills and get the most enjoyment from both the sport and their HPR!
Alongside our Sunday training, we have run a number of other events, including HPR shoot-over days, and both Retrieving and water workshops. And we plan to run many more across 2025.
Other events for the diary include our weekly Monday training that we started in 2023 at Loxwood, just south of Cranleigh in Surrey. This has proved very successful. We usually get between 3-5 handlers each week, where myself and Silke Ebling, a gundog trainer, take the class jointly. We have some lovely land, that includes water, and also enclosed areas for hunting. It’s ideal!
Finally, we are planning our first Club Working Test. This will be on Saturday, June 1st, near Winchester in Hampshire. We are very excited, and the planning is well in hand to make this a really great event.
For more details, please go to our FB page – GSP & Surrey & Hants Club and join the Club. It gives full details of when and where we train, costs and other upcoming events. Please note that we are affiliated to GSPC and therefore please join the Club, which you can do through this website to become a member. You get the benefit of great training, in a safe environment fully insured by the Club.

Sussex Branch
The Sussex group unofficially started in 1979/80 by a small group of GSP owning enthusiasts Ken Poundsbury, Derek and John Batchelor, Alan Church and Paddy McIllvenny who used to meet for training sessions at Stanmer Woods, near Brighton.
Sue Parr joined this little group in 1981 and as knowledge of the group spread it steadily grew, with Trevor Shearman, Pam and Pete Terry and Sheila and Ken Elliot joining soon after, Sue and Trevor were instrumental in gaining group status in 1983, as support grew, we applied for and were granted Branch status in the mid-1980s. This meant we could hold our own field trials along with annual working test. We also held inter branch test first against South Eastern Counties and eventually with all four branches in the South East including The South West Branch and Surrey and Hants
We have held training at several different venues over the years but now we use 100 Acre Wood on the Ashdown Forest (by kind invitation of Tony Russell). We make every effort to tailor training to the needs of the individual, be it to compete in trials or working tests, shooting dogs, or for people who just want to have a happy, obedient pet.
Training is every second Sunday in the month with the exception of December, when we have month off. We have a great team of very experienced trainers with a wealth of knowledge and most of the HPR breeds (not just GSPs), they have successfully competed in working tests and field trials. Steph Page (our puppy foundation trainer), Mark Dando and Fiona Smith look after the intermediate groups and Alan Parr puts the open dog through their paces. Sue Parr is a floating trainer.
Our Annual Working test is always held at the wonderful Knowlands Farm in Barcombe, East Sussex and we always get a very warm welcome from Nick Lear and his late wife Harriet. Usually the third Saturday in July.

VISIT HPR FT INFO WEBSITEYorkshire Group
We are an active group and hold training classes all year round, on the first Sunday of each month. Our group offers training across the whole of the Yorkshire region, with venues covering diverse and varied terrain, from the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales to arable land in East and South Yorkshire.
Our aim is to provide a friendly and open training environment, covering all stages. Classes offer basic obedience for puppies and beginners, through to the more advanced activities for those members keen to compete in working tests and field trials or attend shoots with their dogs. We welcome all HPR handlers who wish to explore the full potential of their dogs. Currently, we have GSPs and multiple other HPR breeds regularly attending our sessions. All we ask is that attendees are members of the GSPC.
We organise a shot over training days, which are extremely popular, and will be hosting more of these in the future, in addition to our regular hunting training on a working grouse moor and our annual mock working test.
If you need any further information about what we do, or our venues and training sessions, please do not hesitate to contact us via the Secretary’s email address below. We are always happy to hear from fellow HPR enthusiasts, and welcome new members!
